Newsletter 30.09.16

On Monday we had princes and princesses, animals, superheroes, fairies, fire fighters, fairy tale creatures and so many more interesting book characters in F2.  Even the teachers dressed up as the characters from Room on the Broom, our focus book.  As part of the Brilliant Books celebrations we had visiting author Ciaran Murgtah read one of his very own books, Sugar Plum Scary, to us.

As part of our Room on the Broom focus the teachers in F1 and F2 put on a performance for the children which went down a treat!  The children were enthralled.  This further fuelled the children’s interest in the story leading to craft and numeracy activities, that were enjoyed throughout the week.  The children made magic wands and enjoyed casting spells, making potions, witches hats and broomsticks.
You can watch the animated version of the story together with your child at the link below.

On Tuesday the children came to school in their PJ’s ready for snuggle up and read.  Before lunch the children listened to a story and then shared books together.  We strongly encourage you to read to your child every day, the benefits of this to your child’s learning cannot be overestimated.

Tips for reading to your child at home:
·        * Make reading fun.  This should be a special time for you and your child to enjoy together.
·         *Keep reading short, simple and often (young children have shorter attention spans).
·       *  Choose engaging books (in your own language).  Try books with flaps or different textures particularly for children who find it hard to sit.
·         *Ask questions and listen to your child’s ideas and thoughts.
·         *Read favourite stories again and again, this builds enthusiasm for reading.

It is wonderful to see the progress the children are making participating, listening and following instructions during our large group times, they particularly enjoyed parachute games and music with Ms Claudine this week.

First of all, please join us in welcoming Janie Nguyen, Gracie Nguyen and their family who just joined BIS this week. We hope you have many fun filled days with us.

What we have been doing this week:

As the children have shown lots of interest in cooking we opened our F2 Cafe-Restaurant this week. They have been doing lots of pretend play and have been particularly good at serving food. Next week, we will all sit on the carpet and come up with a Restaurant name! This week, the children also showed lots of interest in the Mark-making area and some have started writing the first letter in their names. They have also been practising how to hold a pen properly. This week on our carpet sessions, we have introduced the sounds 'a' and 's'. The children have been brilliant at saying the sounds out loud.

Happy Moon Festival!
Thank you everyone for coming along to our Moon Festival Fair on Thursday.   Our TAs did a splendid job running exciting activities for everyone to enjoy and the children looked fabulous dressed in their beautiful Ao Dais.

It was great to chat with you all during our parent teacher meeting this week.  Thank you for coming in, we enjoyed talking to you about how your child has settled in to life in F2 and learning more about what they like at home.  Please remember if you ever have any questions, concerns or celebrations you can share them with us at any time by speaking to the teachers at the end of the day or by e-mail.

This week brought about some new sensory experiences for our enthusiastic group of F2 learners.  We explored jelly stones in our investigation area and floam at our malleable table.   The children had their first dip in our Splash Pool, which went swimmingly!  Thank you for taking the time to label your child's uniform and swimming things, it's greatly appreciated.

The children have expressed a lot of interest in the small world toys, noticeably the trains and are learning how to share their interest together as they play with and alongside each other.   Outside the children have continued to enjoyed water play, scooping, pouring and fishing!  We saw some great perseverance displayed as children stuck with the activity to hook a fish or two.

Newsletter 10.09.16

It is our first week of spending full day in school and all F2 children did really well!

Please join us in welcoming Andy and his family who just joined BIS this week.
We hope you have many fun filled days with us.

What we have been doing this week:
F2 children busied themselves exploring the different learning areas and spaces this week.

In the role-play area, they continue to do lots of cooking with some children asking questions like "What do you want to eat?" They have been particularly good at pretending to prepare meals and serving food. Some children have also shown interest in wearing prince and princess costumes in the classroom. In the coming weeks, will we have a restaurant or a castle in F2T?

In the Mark-making area, the children continue to explore a range of writing tools such as pencils, feltips, crayons, chalks and white board markers. Some children are beginning to talk about their pictures whilst some enjoy making random marks on paper. Next week, we will introduce the children's individual Mark-making Book which they will get to bring home at the end of the school year.

This week, the children continue to learn about basic shapes in the Maths area. Some are also able to identify star, diamond, oval and heart.  We've also added some mark-making  tools in the Maths area so they can draw around 2D shapes.

In the Investigation area, the children loved exploring our under the sea themed tuff spot and have been naming some sea animals.

On Thursday, Ms Precious had some lovely little helpers in the Malleable area. Khuong, Duc Phu, Bao Nhi, Henry, Mie, Janie, Nhat Hoang and Kathy had a go at making playdough. They all waited patiently for their turn to do some mixing, pouring and kneading. The children also voted as to what colour we will use. At the end, majority chose yellow. They all did a great job!

Also for the first time this week, the children went upstairs to the music room and had their Music session with Mr Jon. They enthusiastically joined in with singing and movement activities.

How you can help your child at home?
This week, we've spent our carpet sessions reading stories to the children and doing some songs and rhymes. Here are some stories we've read in class and the songs we've been singing:
