Newsletter 10.03.17

This week in F2T, we continue to focus on our talk4writing book which is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Some  of our amazing F2 children are already able to re tell the story in their own words. They have also showed lots of interest in mark-making and are beginning to create their very own story maps. A lot of the children also attempted to sequence the story using our sequencing cards. 

In our carpet sessions this week, we talked about being respectful at all times. We are learning to be respectful to our friends/teachers, our environment and our resources. In the next few weeks, we will be keeping Rory Respect in our class to remind us of the good choices we need to make. 

To continue develop children's confidence in speaking both in big and small groups, they carry on taking turns in sharing what's inside their all All About Me Bags. The children are very proud of their favourite toys from home and are becoming more confident in using a variety of english words to describe their toys.

The children are also enjoying our music sessions with Mr Jon. They have been particularly good in dancing to some familiar songs such as Na Na Na, I Know A Chicken and Shake Your Sillies. In the Library, F2 have now mastered their routine when borrowing books. They have also been working hard on listening and responding to their teachers during story time. We are encouring children to ask lots of question and to also respond to who, what, where, why and how questions. 

How to help your child at home:

Play simple jigsaw puzzles

This will allow your child to learn patience, solve problems and develop their hand-eye coordination.

Natural resources

Looking after our natural resources such as plants, pets and other living things is always a good choice. Please remember to talk to your child about the importance of caring for these living things.

Independence

In F2, we always encourage the children to be independent and do things on their own such as feeding themselves, dressing up, washing their hands before mealtime or using the toilet. Please encourage your child to do the same at home. You may also want to give them simple tasks such as setting the table for dinner or putting toys away after play time.

Newsletter 03.03.17

This week the children were introduced to our new Talk 4 Writing book - The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Over the next few weeks we will unpick the story further, develop some actions to support the children's retell and then use the story as a frame for our own "Very Hungry_____ " stories.  If you are unfamiliar with the story, the animated version can be found below.

                                         

The children were very excited to welcome some fish to our F2 class on Monday.  This has led to a lot of discussion about what we need to do to care for them.  Sadly one died midweek, however this again provided the children with a valuable learning opportunity.  F2 now have a better understanding about what it means to be responsible for the care of a living creature.

Andy kindly brought in a centipede for us to look at.  We talked about how we look with our eyes, (not with our hands) and we noticed that it had a lot of wriggly legs. We think all those legs must mean it will run extra fast! If anyone has a garden and happens to find caterpillars, we'd LOVE to look at them in class too.  The children watched a short clip of a caterpillar's amazing metamorphosis into a butterfly. They were stunned into complete silence! :-)

A listening station has been set up in class this week, the children have enjoyed using it to listen to short stories and songs.  As only two children can listen at a time, this has been a great opportunity for the children to practise turn-taking.

The children are developing their number recognition. This week they enjoyed bedazzling giant numbers to be displayed in class.  Children also practised counting caterpillars onto a numbered leaf.  Remember parents, supporting your child's developing Numeracy skills is a breeze at home, anything can be counted; slices of banana, the number of chairs around your dining room table, toothbrushes in your bathroom, steps to bed or jumps down the hallway.  And don't forget to help draw your child's attention to numerals and shapes they see in their daily life; on the mail box, car number plate, front door, in the elevator or on the tv remote control. We are teaching the children to become aware and interested in Maths in their environment.

During our carpet sessions this week, we have been talking about using our indoor voices while playing in the classroom. The children are learning that by using an indoor voice they are being respectful of their friends and their learning space.

This Week's Highlights:

Superhero Bootcamp in BVIS

On Wednesday, all EYFS children had a SUPER-rific morning in BVIS! When we arrived, we were greeted by the lovely EYFS students and teachers from BVIS. Altogether, the children from both campuses sang a superhero song. There were lots of brilliant singing and dancing. The children then had a go at playing in the big field to explore the superhero 'training camp' and also had the opportunity to play in the EYFS outdoor area. It was lovely to see everyone mingling and exploring a new environment. Thank you to all parents for dressing up your children with their favourite superhero characters. 

The Little Red Hen

In F2 this week, we continue to focus on the Little Red Hen story. A lot of children did a fantastic job in helping the little red hen make some bread! In return, each of them had a slice of the little red hen's very tasty bread-- they all loved it!

Notices:

Kimberly's uniform - Please check the labels in your child's uniform. A complete set of school uniform has been removed from Kimberly's bag and we would very much like to give it back to them.

All About Me Bag – Please ask your child to choose only 1 item to put in the All About Me Bag. The carpet session when we share this is designed around encouraging questioning and talking, sharing what is special to us.

Swimming- Please DO NOT forget to bring your child's swimming kit every Mondays and Thursdays. If your child is UNABLE to swim, please provide us with a medical certificate.
